Biography

Childhood

Märten's dragon parent was killed during an altercation with elvian soldiers and taken in my them to use as a model organism in their research on dragons. He was brought up in an environment that mimicked what the elves believed to be the dragon's ideal environment; they made him believe he was the ruler of a kingdom and gave a high end education. Their main care taker during the years was an ex-soldier [white] who disagreed with the experiment but took a liking to Märten. The hopes of the elves would be that they could observe Märten transform into a dragon form once he reached maturity in his twenties. Around the age of 24 the elves started to suspect Märten's dragon genes may have been too watered out to allow for an actual transformation. [white] in fear of what they might do to him staged a break out, lying to Märten about having to go on a pilgrimage around the country so they could be finally crowned king once he understood the life of his people.

Season 1

Märten joins the group for their travels after the fake queen arc, he uses WHite’s given goal of “getting to know his servants” as his reason. The reason it takes him time to understand its absurdity is because it was explained to him that many of the people were uneducated, unaware of their king’s name. His general aloofness and lack of care towards those he perceived as below caused them to not even try to argue with anyone who would not understand who he was. A part of him believing getting offended or angry would make him fail his pilgrimage. His deeper reason for joining them was in hopes they could help him find another royal dragon descendant as him. Their doubts about his position started to seep in the longer he talked to his travel companions. The final nail in the coffin is the knowledge they gain in their research, none of it mentioning anything about his lineage. His new goal becomes finding out the truth of what was happening.

Season 2

After the elven village, Märten gets his answer. Having learnt the lies he was raised by and having broken their horns in anger towards the royal ubgrinding, he spends some time failing to process his grief. For once he doesn’t look stoic but empty. In further rebellion and self punishment, during that time he wears sleeves to cover his arms, making him constantly uncomfortable. Only once [event] happens do they realise the importance of the bonds he’s made with his companions and accepts reality. In the finale, he finds purpose in the help he is able to provide to the village’s community by aiding them in their evacuation

Epilogue

Having understood his place, translating his understanding of himself as a king to an urge to help those they used to see as peasants, he chooses to go on a real journey of self discovery. He becomes a travelling magician, moving from town to town sustaining himself on light shows he would do in public, trying to experience as many different cultures as they can.

Relationships

Mixa

Mixa is pretty much the second person Märten makes a connection with and is thus subconsciously protective of her without realising it. They become very comfortable with each other, including physically and so it isn't rare to see them cuddling or Märten picking Mixa up. Märten is Mixa's lighthearted soldier in many interactions. The time with the both of them is spent with Mixa talking and Märten listening. Later on, Märten becomes scared that people think he doesn't like them because he doesn't show a lot of emotions but is glad that Mixa doesn't seem to mind.

Onion

To everyone's surprise around them, Märten and Onion start getting along really fast. In the beginning, Märten would get offended by Onion's pranks and 'immoral' behaviour, once Onion stopped directing them at him, he started seeing Onion in a new light. Despite not saying it, Märten is very grateful for Onion explaining to him a lot of things about every day life. They both communicate in sign language to Märten's pleasure because he finds it a more sophisticated language. Märten also respects Onion's taste in books though he wouldn't tell others because he knows how embarassed Onion gets. When Onion becomes a librarian, Märten becomes one of the most loyal customers whenever he's in the region.

Flint

Märten didn't care much about Flint in the beginning, he just seemed weird and flighty, slightly annoying from Märten's perspective. The only reason Flint put up with him was because of Mixa vouching for him. Later on, Märten noticed Flint becoming more comfortable and they started talking to each other about magical and scientific theories, Flint explaining potion and Märten his own body's magic. Märten enjoys the intellectual challenge and they fall into a simple rythm when in the same space.
